Quite awhile ago John had planned to backpack up to the Granddaddy Basin. He said Carson was still a bit too young to handle the long hike with a pack. Well, last Monday he changed his mind and decided he wanted Carson to go. We found a pack his size, but opted not to spend the money and just send him with our hiking pack instead. They headed out on Friday so it was just Landon and I at home for the weekend. Very relaxing.
John said Carson did great. Between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning he hiked 15 miles! That is a lot of hiking for an eight year old. We bought him a pricey little emergency whistle since our biggest fear was him getting lost and he wore that whistle the entire weekend. On the way down the guys had to take turns carrying Carson's backpack since he had worn his shoulders raw. Even carrying his lightweight backpack to school this morning was painful for him. Next year we'll splurge and get the children's pack from REI.
Carson was wired all evening after they returned. I think he was so thrilled to be included on such a grown-up adventure that not many eight year old's could handle without a lot of whining and tears. He is already excited about going again next year.
John, on the other hand had a monstrously heavy pack. Carson carried his own clothing, but John had to carry food for two and mummy bags for two, it was just HEAVY! In a couple more years Landon will be included in the adventure, and while he doesn't understand why he has to wait, I think it will be so much fun when we can go as a family.
